i had heard that once spotifykorea launched kakaom kept the artists they distributed unavailable there, im surprised it spread globally. is spotify really such a big threat to melon? at any rate, its the consumers and the artists who are most affected. this is like the issue with other types of streaming platforms....everyone keeps fighting for distribution rights and splintering into dozens of paid services; ultimately piracy is gonna be back on the rise and streaming services will see a drop in users.

might cancel my spotify subscription and go back to the old days if this stays as it is; good thing i have my cd player~

edit: i wonder if this might be an indication that kakaom wants to expand melon into a global platform?

An Update from Kakao M:
"KakaoM has had an agreement with Spotify on overseas music distribution. We are currently negotiating our contract with them for Korea, but we were notified of our contract ending for everywhere else on February 28th. We asked to renew the contract. However, Spotify said that the Korean and overseas contract has to be negotiated simultaneously, so the overseas service is currently disabled. We are still talking about distributions."

You will be getting your songs back soon

Even though this had happened a year ago, I came to realise that this is one of the reasons why some or most ppl would rather own a physical copy of the artist’s albums rather than not owning one, in case if this issue were to happen again. Or even worst case scenario, if Spotify (& even any other music apps) were to be discontinued at anytime in the future..but for now, let’s hope that this will never be the case to ever happen. Like I can’t imagine buying a couple or plenty of physical albums at once if music apps werent available.
